Beaver Ecology with Scott Jones

Last Spring the we teamed up with members of the Student Association for Archaeological Sciences (SAAS) and had Scott Jones teach us about primitive technologies and beaver ecology.  Scott Jones owns and runs Media Prehistoria, and organization dedicated to exploring, rediscovering and educating the public about early technology and lifeways with hands-on classes and instruction provide first-hand experience, and interpretive demonstrations to provide a unique view into the past.

Following a small woodland stream we learned how beavers clear trees and widen banks to create swamps downstream.  Beavers, then, build dams in stages resulting in new ecosystems for many different species.  For this reason flat banks such as the one across the dam shown in the picture are often early hominid sites in the Upper Piedmont.

More pictures from this trip are posted in the gallery, and more information about Scott Jones and primitive technologies are available at http://www.mediaprehistoria.com/.

New Forum! PDF Print E-mail

We are excited to announce that we have just launched a new forum for the Anthropology Society.  This forum will allow for a virtual interface in which students can actively engage in an academic community on their own time.  The forum will be a good resource for information about grad schools, internships, activity planning, grants, peer sharing, study abroad, and much more.  Simply register a user name and you will then be able to seeall sections and post in the forum.  The forum will remain linked in the side bar, but the URL is:  http://anthsoc.anthro.uga.edu/forums/

Please be sure to read the welcome message at the top of the announcements section.
